SIGUNG OLIVER CHENG
Sifu Oliver Cheng was introduced to and started learning Wing Chun from friends during his high school years in Hong Kong.
Later, after arriving in Australia, he attended weekend workshops with Sifu Jimmy Fung and Sifu Felix Leong. Sifu Cheng also met Yip Chun (Son of Grandmaster Yip Man) while he was visiting Australia to teach Wing Chun seminars. Consequently, Sifu Cheng travelled back to Hong Kong over a number of years to be a private student of Yip Chun and after completing his study of the Hong Kong style, continued to search for more teachers in the art of Wing Chun. Through Yip Chun he had the opportunity to meet Sifu Pan Nam in Foshan, China, who introduced him to the Foshan style of Wing Chun as well.
Through extensive research, Sifu Cheng eventually came across the name of Grandmaster Sum Nung who was head of the Guangzhou Wing Chun style and sole disciple of Great Grandmaster Yuen Kay San, a well known practitioner in the Wing Chun history.
Cheng's Wing Chun Wu Shu Academy
It took Sifu Cheng a few years to find Grandmaster Sum Nung who was a very private man but eventually a meeting was arranged through family and mutual friends. Since then, Sifu Cheng lived and trained in the home of Grandmaster Sum Nung, eventually becoming a disciple. In 1995, Sifu Cheng invited Grandmaster Sum Nung to conduct Wing Chun workshops in Canberra which many of Sifu Cheng’s assistant instructors and students attended.
Over the years, Sifu Cheng ran a successful Cheng’s Wing Chun Academy in many parts of Canberra and taught thousands of students. He eventually retired from public teaching and passed on his school to his senior instructors. Over the years, he still made time to get together with his students to stay in touch and help them to progress in their training.
At their insistent requests, he began teaching a handful of his old students and grand students privately, in order to preserve the art of Wing Chun for future generations.
