Inside black lion wing chun
Sifu Nick
WONG YAM SUN • 黄任新
Sifu Nick Wong is the Head Instructor and founder of Black Lion Wing Chun. His martial arts journey began at the age of 14, when his father introduced him to Sifu Oliver Cheng - a private student of Grandmaster Ip Chun and a disciple of Grandmaster Sum Nung.

In the early stages of his training, Sifu Nick committed himself with unwavering dedication to his practice in Wing Chun. His daily routine included countless hours of stance work, repeated drills of punches, footwork, and techniques. Even after entering the workforce, he found creative ways to continue his practice - doing deep squats while packing shelves, standing in stance while working from the computer, or technique drills when no one was watching. He would often rush through meals during lunch breaks just to squeeze in more training time. His evenings were spent training late into the night, driven by a determination that persists to this day.
Throughout his development, Sifu Nick trained alongside many peers and engaged in numerous sparring/training sessions with practitioners of other martial arts such as Karate, Judo, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do and others. These experiences broadened his exposure to the martial arts world and reinforced the effectiveness of what he was taught in Wing Chun.

Under the mentorship of Sifu Cheng, Nick not only learned Wing Chun techniques but also gained a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture which enriched his understanding of kung fu (hard work, over a long period of time to attain skill) . He learned the importance of quality over quantity and how to further refine what he had already achieved. Sifu Nick believes that Wing Chun is not just a physical discipline but a study, offering endless depth for those who really want it. This understanding brought him consistent, tangible growth - something he now strives to help others achieve.

Motivated by this, a desire to share the benefits of Kung Fu and preserve the authentic spirit of Wing Chun, Nick founded Black Lion, where he continues to teach and inspire students on their own martial arts journeys. Sifu Nick, like his Sifu before him, emphasises a thorough practice of the foundations from which all advanced skills arise.

Wing Chun
black lion Curriculum & Lineage
Wing Chun is a Southern Chinese martial art which originated in the famous Shaolin Temple. Developed during the early Qing Dynasty, it was designed to enable individuals to overcome strong and powerful opponents. Wing Chun emphasizes mastery of structure, centerline theory, speed and the study of force - allowing practitioners to control the opponent in a relaxed and seemingly effortless manner, using an opponent’s own strength against them.

Through proper structure and speed, Wing Chun allows for the development of significant power, regardless of size or physical strength. It is a system that offers limitless progression, as improvement is driven by precision and internal understanding rather than athleticism alone.

Proficiency in Wing Chun develops as a process. starting with a strong focus on posture, coordination, and power generation. The body is trained to move as a connected unit, transforming how one reacts, moves, and generates force. As a student’s foundation strengthens, their movements become fluid, adaptable, and capable of blending seamlessly into spontaneous combinations. Wing Chun features relatively few core techniques, they can be strung together in endless sequences with experienced practitioners able to create applications of their own.

Rather than trading blows, Wing Chun seeks to deflect, control, and end confrontations swiftly and decisively. Its principles and biomechanics are designed to neutralize differences in size and strength, allowing practitioners to dominate the exchange without relying on brute force. A Wing Chun fighter doesn’t clash with an opponent, but rather moves with them, funneling their efforts into their self-led defeat. Combating with an experienced Wing Chun practitioner is like being on a rocking boat - the more you desperately run from side to side to escape the water, you make the situation progressively worse until you inevitable capsize.

Beyond combat, Wing Chun builds fitness, confidence and discipline, making it a complete system for strengthening both body and mind while developing calm focus under pressure.
