Sifu Nick
WONG YAM SUN • 黄任新
Sifu Nick Wong 黄任新 is a dedicated practitioner and teacher of both Ip Man and Sum Nung styles of Wing Chun Kung Fu. As a second-generation teacher, he endeavours to accurately transmit both styles as they were taught to him.

Sifu Nick started his martial arts journey in his early teenage years with Karate and practiced what he learned from books and movies. This obsession with martial arts, and fate, eventually led him to the school of Sifu Oliver Cheng, where he was introduced, and would commit his life to, the practice and study of Wing Chun.

Sifu Nick has spent over 20 years seeking, practicing, and embodying traditional methods and theories. He has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge enriched by studies with his senior kung fu brothers (particularly Sifu Andrew L.) and Sifu Oliver Cheng, from whom he receives the traditional teachings of Chinese culture and Guangzhou Sum Nung Wing Chun. Sifu Nick is constantly refining his own understanding of the inner workings of the style and pushing his training to higher standards, in turn streamlining his teachings so his students not only receive authenticity but also a clear roadmap to attainment.

In 2022, after many years of practice, assisting the establishment of other Kung Fu schools, and teaching small groups of peers and students locally, Sifu Nick, with the encouragement of his own Sifu, founded Black Lion Wing Chun. The goal was to create a community of like-minded individuals helping one another to understand and implement Wing Chun practice and theory. That same year, Sifu Nick also began teaching Wing Chun to children for non-profit organisations.

Black Lion Wing Chun is dedicated to the teaching and practice of authentic Wing Chun principles, with an emphasis on what we consider to be the heart and soul of Wing Chun: the foundations.

Wing Chun
black lion Curriculum & Lineage
Wing Chun is a Southern Chinese martial art which originated in the famous Shaolin Temple. Developed during the early Qing Dynasty, it was designed to enable individuals to overcome strong and powerful opponents. Wing Chun emphasizes mastery of structure, centerline theory, speed and the study of force - allowing practitioners to control the opponent in a relaxed and seemingly effortless manner, using an opponent’s own strength against them.

Through proper structure and speed, Wing Chun allows for the development of significant power, regardless of size or physical strength. It is a system that offers limitless progression, as improvement is driven by precision and internal understanding rather than athleticism alone.

Proficiency in Wing Chun develops as a process. starting with a strong focus on posture, coordination, and power generation. The body is trained to move as a connected unit, transforming how one reacts, moves, and generates force. As a student’s foundation strengthens, their movements become fluid, adaptable, and capable of blending seamlessly into spontaneous combinations. Wing Chun features relatively few core techniques, they can be strung together in endless sequences with experienced practitioners able to create applications of their own.

Rather than trading blows, Wing Chun seeks to deflect, control, and end confrontations swiftly and decisively. Its principles and biomechanics are designed to neutralize differences in size and strength, allowing practitioners to dominate the exchange without relying on brute force. Beyond combat, Wing Chun builds fitness, confidence and discipline, making it a complete system for strengthening both body and mind while developing calm focus under pressure.

At Black Lion Wing Chun, foundational body structure, stance training, forms, partner drills, sensitivity training, and applied practice are taught as an integrated system. These methods develop awareness, control, and adaptability, forming the basis for effective self-defence and continued personal refinement. Emphasis is placed on strong fundamentals, as these principles underpin all advanced skill within the art.
